LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Venezuela, America are business partners

William Mark Clarke’s letter to the editor in Thursday’s Las Vegas Sun (headlined “Why the outrage over laughing and joking?”), about the handshake between President Barack Obama and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, was insightful and intelligent.

One more fact can be added: Venezuela is one of the top countries that ship crude oil to the United States.

Venezuela is actually the fourth country in terms of crude oil imports here. The first three are Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

In terms of petroleum, the U.S. and Venezuela are firm and long-standing business partners.

Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., said about Chavez last Sunday on CNN, “This is a person who is one of the most anti-American leaders in the entire world.” Does Mr. Ensign know that Chavez is the leader of a country that ships more than a million barrels of oil to the United States every day?
