LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Government has moral obligations, too

Some Las Vegans believe in a system of unrestrained capitalism where greed trumps not only fairness and morality, but ethics as well. They want the government to stay out of their lives (not other people’s lives, just their own). They demand that corporations be free of regulations. They label any person who considers the needs and welfare of other people a socialist. Their credo is, “It’s every man for himself, and let the devil take the hindmost.”

However, I think that anyone who makes his home and his livelihood in Las Vegas and thinks the government should stay out of anything but defense, should try to imagine what Las Vegas would be like if the federal government hadn’t stepped in and built Hoover Dam. No dam, no Vegas, just desert. End of story.

And wouldn’t it have been just dandy if the dam were later privatized so that an energy company, such as Enron, had owned it, controlled the electricity it generated and sold the water to the states. Pretty scary scenario, wouldn’t you agree?
