It is not surprising to learn that for the past 20 years, the major oil and gas companies have contributed nearly three times more political campaign donations to Republicans in the U.S. House than to Democrats.
The Republicans (Rep. Joe Barton of Texas and others) returned the favor by apologizing to BP for the U.S. “shakedown” requiring BP to deposit $20 billion into an escrow account for payment to victims of the tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Some Republican congressmen have chided Barton for his choice of words — he apologized, but it wasn’t sincere — but they still want to lift the moratorium on deep-water drilling to “save jobs” in the affected states. The future of our pristine waters and beaches does not seem to be a factor — money talks.
