LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Harry Reid is our best choice for U.S. Senate

I compulsively abhor career politicians. Oftentimes this bias clouds my better judgment. This election I will control my rage and emotions and vote for the candidate who best represents my core beliefs.

I believe in a clean Nevada, free of high-level nuclear waste and dirty coal-fired generating plants, and I believe in equal rights for gays and freedom of choice for women. I also believe in all things science, such as evolution, stem cell research, and the dangers of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Furthermore, I believe in the need for our industries to be regulated to curtail such events as occurred with Enron, the near collapse of banks and Wall Street and the BP oil spill. I also believe in a need for health insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing conditions and allowing the George W. Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy to expire.

Therefore, as a voter of sound mind, I must vote for Harry Reid.

Now is a good time for Democrats to rally around a party pledge. They can restore voter credibility by adopting principles as follows: For every extra dollar collected in taxes, government can cut expenses by an equal or greater amount.

Democrats also can vow to improve national health care to include tort reform, universal shopping, and national computerization and coverage. Also, they can finally admit that we have an immigration problem, and begin identifying undocumented workers and giving job priority to qualified citizens.

I admire the Tea Party for its drive to organize and make a difference, but many of its ultraconservative ideas are not in the best interest of this nation. In the past few months, oceans of money have poured into this grass-roots movement and specifically into Sharron Angle’s campaign. Apparently, certain aspects of this Tea Party are made to order for the rich and the greedy.

I implore voters to cast your passion aside and use your intellect when voting.
