LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Timely advice for teachers, students

The current cacophony about the tribulations of education in the United States compels me to insert a portion of my 48 years as an educator into the fray; 37 of those years were as a school-level administrator. My belief in simplicity for success translated into four requirements for students: regular attendance, punctuality, productivity and reasonable behavior.

The expectations communicated to teachers were equally minimal: knowledge of subject, knowledge about student learning strengths and limitations, clear presentations, allow students time to assimilate information, reinforce positive behavior, and redirect negative behavior.

With few exceptions, I found these to be accepted by students and evident in observed teacher performance.

Everything else related to form and function of the school was my responsibility. All of us can use a few extra dollars. But money’s scarce and times are hard. So it’s up to kids to earn their report card.
