LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Our national anthem is not a celebrity showcase

When are people going to get the fact that the national anthem is not and should not be part of the entertainment at any sporting event?

Individuals who try to put their personal spin on the arrangement have to stop singing it as if they were covering a soulful ballad. Trying to change the arrangement makes it harder to remember the words of a difficult song. And what’s wrong with using a teleprompter?

Here’s an idea for the mental giants who put these shows together: Take the entertainment factor out of the next rendition of the anthem and replace it with the solemn respect it deserves. Instead of Christina Aguilera screwing it up at the Super Bowl, wouldn’t it have been moving to see the Army staff sergeant, who recently was awarded the Medal of Honor, just recite the words?

It was written as a poem, anyway. The meaning is in the words, not in the caterwauling of an “artist” who wants to make it his or her own. You can’t cover it like you would a tune by The Beatles.
