With respect to the Las Vegas Sun’s Saturday story about proposals by police to install red-light cameras, “To Watch You”:
So the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which is funded by auto insurers, has done a study that has concluded that red-light cameras are good for cities? I’m not surprised that insurance companies have reached that conclusion.
If lawmakers pass a bill to allow red-light cameras, it would be a big cash cow for financially strapped cities and a multimillion-dollar windfall for insurance companies because they would have another reason to add hundreds of dollars to your insurance bill every year — if you get a moving violation, they could raise your rates.
The ones who lose are struggling Nevadans. Because now we would have to send more of our hard-earned money to the government and to out-of-town insurance companies. It’s all about the money.
Why not instead make lights stay red longer so cars don’t enter the intersection so soon after another light turns red? I guess there is no money in that.
