LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

America shouldn’t meddle in Egypt’s political affairs

No one can predict the final outcome of the current Egyptian revolution. One thing is certain, however. President Barack Obama’s administration should avoid the temptation to meddle in a complicated dynamic that only the Egyptians are equipped to handle.

The transition of power is a potentially explosive phenomenon and must be handled very carefully. There is no doubt in my mind that Hosni Mubarak understood his days were numbered and that he had put in place the political mechanisms to effect the transition.

Immediate attempts to shift to a Western-style democracy could likely lead to a near-term vacuum that the Muslim Brotherhood would exploit to its advantage. The threat of a theocratic and tyrannical regime led by this political entity would be a disaster to the aspirations of the Egyptian people and the stability of both the region and the world. It’s best that the political process in Egypt progress in an orderly manner without interference from America.
