LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Budget cuts make Nevada’s bad situation worse

I have a good friend, a widowed senior, who just received a card from Nevada’s Aging and Disability Services Division, telling her that because of the projected deficit in state revenue, Gov. Brian Sandoval’s recommended budget has proposed eliminating the Senior Tax Assistance/Rent Rebate program.

This lady is a proud American who worked all her life, and now she is trying to get by on a small pension from her husband’s company and her Social Security check. This assistance would have been very helpful to her and seniors like her.

The governor’s budget cuts are going too far. Nevada has never fully funded its programs. Whether it’s education or other state-supported entities, Nevada has always been at or near the bottom in funding compared with other states. I suggest that Nevada no longer be known as the Silver State, but as the Third-World State.
