LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

County overseers are real culprit in sick-leave abuse

I am amazed at the finger-pointing over the abuse of sick leave by a segment of Clark County firefighters. This falls at the feet of the Clark County Commission.

It is the commission’s job to secure Clark County’s money. The commission negotiates the contracts or hires someone who does. When the county hires or promotes managers, it needs to ensure those managers and supervisors are doing their jobs.

This situation simply does not happen in the private sector. If a supervisor allowed his employee to abuse sick leave, both the abuser and his supervisor would be fired. When is the last time someone heard a CEO ask the police department to look into fraudulent use of sick leave?

Man up! Leave the police out of it. Fire every employee who abused the county sick-leave policy and terminate every manager and supervisor who allowed it to happen, with no pension benefits, except what those employees contributed.

As a condition of employment, ensure a new hire understands and signs the county human resources policy, and the consequences of any failure to meet those standards. This is not rocket science; it is standard business practice.
