LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Are casinos, mines paying their fair share of taxes?

Teachers and state, county and city employees have been made out as villains. But in most cases I sense they would contribute more to their health care and pensions.

These public employees are not the only reason for a shortfall of money; the casinos and mining interests enjoy very favorable tax rates. International mine owners in Northern Nevada enjoy huge profits yet pay little to our state. I’m sure several other mine companies would jump in if they threatened to leave.

Our casinos must have their tax rates compared with New Jersey and China casinos to ensure Nevadans receive an equitable share of taxes.

It’s not someone else’s problem, it’s our problem.
