Letter to the editor:

Changed motto excludes Americans

In his letter to the readers June 25, “Patriot Matt” makes some excellent points. But he omits reference to a divisive issue that has plagued our country for more than 50 years. Before 1954, the United States was “one nation indivisible.” Our national motto was “e pluribus unum,” which means “out of many, one.” These were beautiful sentiments describing our nation. But too many of us were not happy with everyone not believing as they do. So we became “one nation under God” and our national motto became “In God we trust.” Thus, an estimated 30 million Americans who do not feel the need for a god were excluded from the description of our nation.

We all want to be good Americans, regardless of our wonderful ethnic diversity. It’s shameful that some of us are still excluded based on our religious (or nonreligious) beliefs.

Patriot Matt concludes his letter with the obligatory “God bless America.” So it goes.

I’ll close with: Reason and Justice guide America,

Patriot Mel Lipman
