One more reason why I’m not coming back after all these years: the hidden, unannounced $3 charge for taxi fares. It’s not just that it’s there; it’s not told to you until after you’ve paid with the card, the convenience of which is promoted.

The use of the card may cost the merchant (cab driver) a modest charge, but he or she has opted to make that means of payment available for his or her convenience to ensure payment.

  1. If a $3 charge, hidden as it is, determines your desire to/not to come back, then Las Vegas doesn't need you. Go to Paris, France and see how the cabbies rip off Americans there. It's the tourist generations' talk that legends are made from.

  2. You're wrong, CarmineD. All fees should be posted up-front; no matter the amount. I refuse to pay an annual fee, interest or a fee of any amount to any business for obtaining or using my debit cards. Either I will pay cash or I will shop elsewhere. But I have to know about the charges in advance to avoid them. Another thing, the writer is misinformed about who accepts the credit or debit cards. It wasn't the cabbie who made the choice to accept electronic payments - it was the company. Back in the days when I drove a cab, accepting credit cards in the cab was just beginning and the one I worked for wanted to charge the driver when a fare used one. I, among many others, balked. If the company wanted to accept credit cards, then they had to assume the costs, not the drivers. When my wife & I owned restaurants, we did not make our waitresses (they were not called "food servers" back then) pay the 5% fee imposed by credit card companies. That was a business decision we made and our responsibility to pay for. No difference here.

    I'm not wrong. I have been screwed by the cabbies everytime I went to Paris. Americans have for decades. I still go back and relish the chance to do so. If hidden fees are the gauge for the writer's basis to come/not to come to Las Vegas then I say, with the same relish that I enjoy Paris, good riddance.


  4. $3.00 is not a lot of money,but at least it's disclosed as a fee charged.If this is all that's going to keep you away from Las Vegas, then you didn't like our city once you got here anyway.There's no charge for all the wonderful sights there are to see in our great city at no cost to you.

  5. Carmine, Sam: $3 isn't very much, true. I've stopped doing business with a number of companies for even less. But it's been instances of what I saw as either "the tip of the iceberg" or as "the last straw."

  6. "Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; shame on me." Why let your self be bitten more than once, CarmineD? There are other modes of transportation. But you miss the point. I don't care about the 3 bucks. I do care about folks not being made aware of it upfront. As for anyone being taken for a "ride" by a cabdriver - don't pay him/her. Make him/her call the authorities and explain just why he/she "long-hauled" you or otherwise ran the fare up. He/she might just face a stiff fine or, worse, lose their license to drive a cab if you do and they will, in most cases, back down and settle for what's right.

    That's exactly what I did in Paris on several occasions. While my French is not very good, the cabbies understand when I say: Gendarme. However, Jerry on one occasion the cabbie in an effort to dash off, almost ran me over.


  8. "First of all the fee is clearly posted along with the rates on the doors of the taxi AND the rate sheet inside the cab on the dash. Second, cabbies in Las Vegas do not own or lease cabs, they are employees, they have no choice and no discretion, nor do they get any portion of the credit card fee. The receipt that must be signed by the customer also clearly indicates the card fee and the machine that the card is run through indicates the fee prior to accepting the charge the customer must agree to the fee.

  9. I was unaware that the fee was "clearly" posted. That makes all the difference in the world and I have no problem with the whole business transaction now that I have that knowledge. It's the writers fault. He should have paid cash if he objected to the fee. And you are partially correct, CarmineD. Drivers do not own the cabs and leases are not permitted, but, technically, they are not employees. That's how management gets away with no hourly minimum pay, no holiday pay, 12 hour shifts and no overtime pay. And these guys are "unionized!" With "friends" like the cab unions, who needs "enemies?"
