Other languages aren’t the problem

Regarding the May 8 letter “Make English our official language,” in which the writer is afraid that Spanish has become our second official language:

He should be more afraid of the young people in this country texting and tweeting, through which they have developed their own language like LOL and OMG, which bears no resemblance to the English language. We are raising a generation that will not know how to spell or write.

He is a perfect example of the ignorance of a small mind, especially when he uses Ukraine as an example of instability with “half the country speaking Russian.” This will come as a shock to the writer, but all of Ukraine has always been a Russian-speaking country. At least in my lifetime and my grandmother’s too, and she was born in Russia in the time of the czars.

Learning a little Spanish could only improve Americans’ intelligence quotient.
