letter to the editor:

Right to bear arms essential to safety

I’m reading and hearing a lot lately in the news and newspaper about our Second Amendment to the Constitution.

After freedom of the press, speech and religion, our forefathers secondly came up with the right to bear arms.

Many oppose — too many in my opinion, but the bottom line is the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, be it a cop or a concealed carry permit holder.

As far as guns on campus, how many children’s lives could have been saved if administrators with firearms training were able to return fire instead of waiting for cops to show up? The same goes for movie theaters, restaurants, banks or any other establishment.

Secured areas at airports should remain gun-free.

The vast majority of criminals get their guns illegally. Either the criminal stole it or bought it from a person who stole it. Expanding background checks would not stop the bad guys. They will get a firearm one way or the other. And if the bad guys want to shoot up an establishment, they won’t turn and walk away if they see a sign that says “No guns allowed.” That’s the place they will target, knowing they can’t be stopped by a concealed weapon holder.

Our Second Amendment needs to prevail. The more restrictions put on us, the more innocent lives will be lost.
