Letter to the editor:

Customers first, not monopolies

Kyle Roerink was right on the money when he wrote that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Energy was a house divided on climate change (“For Warren Buffett, a house divided on climate change,” lasvegassun.com, Dec. 4). Buffett often speaks publicly about his commitment to a stable climate, and some of his utilities are leading the nation on wind energy. But here in Nevada his utility, NV Energy, is fighting hard to implement one of the most regressive, damaging proposals in the nation on rooftop solar. If NV Energy gets its way, our growing rooftop-solar industry will be driven out of business and the thousands of jobs will be lost. Buffett is a smart businessman; he needs to make sure his utilities keep up with the changing needs of their customers rather than trying to limit consumer choice and stifle innovation to protect a monopoly.
