What about two juries for major cases? This would eliminate a whole new trial should the outcome be a mistrial or a hung jury. The second jury would hear all the evidence during the case and their opinion would only be considered if the original jury could not come to a decision.
This could be a major money-saving idea, eliminating all the extra costs of a new trial, which is very expensive compared with the hourly wage of 12 other people. This would only be used for a major crime trial.
