letter to the editor:

Who will save the Postal Service?

The George W. Bush administration put the U.S. Postal Service in a no-win situation. The Republicans initiated a bill that required the USPS over the next 10 years to fund their retirees’ benefits for the next 75 years. No other organization, company or corporation is required to do this. Hard to believe, isn’t it?

Only in a Republican America could this happen. It is and was a blatant attempt to eliminate the largest union in the U.S. and the largest employer of veterans in the U.S. More than 100,000 veterans work for the USPS.

The Republicans now have the audacity to complain about the USPS not showing a profit because the first $5.7 billion of earnings each year goes to pay for the ridiculous benefits bill set forth by the Republicans. They’re putting aside benefit monies for postal workers who haven’t been born yet!

The Republicans want to privatize the USPS and dissolve the postal union. I guarantee privatization of the USPS will destroy our current postal delivery system, eliminate workers’ rights and certainly be far more expensive. The Republican Party believes government and unions cannot do anything right. The USPS is launching a new campaign to make everyone aware of their service record and the unfairness of the bill passed with intent to destroy them. Their spokesperson is Danny Glover, who comes from a Postal Service family. We should all want to save the USPS.
