letter to the editor:

Case shows a lack of compassion

Four Virginia residents, through the Competitive Enterprise Institute, brought a case against Obamacare to the Supreme Court. Is this lawsuit about their feelings toward the president or is it because four people do not want to be told they must buy health insurance or face a penalty? Apparently, during interviews one called President Barack Obama an idiot and another called him the anti-Christ. If they win their case, 8 million low-income people in states that refused to set up an exchange will face life-changing events because their health care coverage will terminate, as it will become too expensive.

How did this type of case reach the Supreme Court? What is the motivation behind the case? Why are four people and their well-funded conservative group going to this extreme that may ultimately ruin the lives of poor, innocent people who just want to see the doctor? What is wrong with us as a people? Are the Republicans jealous Obamacare was put in place by Obama without Republican support and has continued to be a success?

When the law was created, who would have imagined states would refuse to set up their own exchanges and not allow their poor and needy constituents access to expanded Medicaid, which was at no cost to the state? Have we lost compassion? It looks that way.
