letters to the editor:

Candidates need to fight for seniors

With officials continually proposing cuts to the Medicare Advantage program, members of Congress could cave into their wishes and approve huge reductions in funding. But Congressman Joe Heck’s opposition to these cuts helps remove this threat to seniors’ health care choices. Now more than ever, we need more members of Congress to be outspoken advocates for a fully funded Advantage program.

It will be a sad day for seniors if efforts to cut Medicare Advantage are successful.

My husband and I live on a fixed income; we have no extra money to pay for increased co-pays or premiums. We selected a Senior Dimensions Medicare Advantage plan because it saves us money; there is no extra premium to pay, and our out-of-pocket costs are reasonable. My husband has had three surgeries for cancer of the kidney and the esophagus. He also has emphysema, a condition that requires him to use oxygen. At one point, he had a hip-replacement surgery that didn’t go well. Now he’s in a wheelchair. My husband is 76 years old and needs ongoing care. That’s exactly what his Advantage plan provides, without breaking the budget. How can anyone even consider taking access to health care away from someone like my husband?

My husband and I will be supporting candidates who fight for senior citizens in this year’s elections. I urge all seniors to contact their federal representatives to ensure seniors receive the care we worked hard for and deserve. Support those who support us.
