Letter to the Editor:

Live animals don’t make good gifts for Easter

The vast number of baby bunnies, chicks and ducks that are given as Easter gifts die within a few weeks, if not days. People buy these cute babies with good intentions, but these animals have complicated needs of which people are not aware.

They require special feeding and consistent temperatures, are frail and are not meant to be handled by children. Victims of unintentional neglect and cruelty, these animals suffer broken bones and internal injuries and carry diseases such as salmonella.

This Easter, please help prevent unnecessary cruelty by giving your children stuffed animals. After the holiday, if your family is ready for a pet, consider an adoptable dog or cat from our local shelter, Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or rescue groups.

Animals are not toys. Nothing with a heartbeat should be given as one.
