Monopoly NV Energy is using its bully pulpit on solar

Lately we’ve been seeing anti-solar TV ads and a brochure included in some NV Energy bills. Is it fair for a protected monopoly, NV Energy, to use our utility money to feed us anti-solar propaganda?

The brochure and solarenergyfairness.com state that NV Energy’s new net metering will give the solar owners $100 million over 12 years. This is an insult to the 17,000 rooftop solar owners who have spent over $680 million for their solar setups. With original net metering, households would have paid $2 a month on average, which is a reasonable contribution for a cleaner, greener Nevada. Compare that with the $38 a month households paid for NV Energy’s $379 million profit pulled out of Nevada in 2015.

It seems the PUC, the Legislature and Gov. Brian Sandoval are all OK with every household paying $38 a month to enrich Berkshire Hathaway’s Wall Street fat cats, but not $2 a month to assist fellow Nevadans making a cleaner, greener Nevada.
