Letter to the Editor:

We each can do a part to save Earth

April is Earth month, and this year we can celebrate new opportunities to help reduce planet warming pollution, make our homes healthy and comfortable, and save money.

Thanks to federal legislation supported by Nevada’s members of Congress, incentives are available to purchase energy-efficient appliances, improve the energy efficiency of our homes, and install rooftop solar. Decisions made around the kitchen table influence 42% of carbon emissions, so consumers have a large role in helping our country move to a clean future.

Electric heat pumps have revolutionized HVAC systems, water heaters, and clothes dryers. They work great, are far more efficient, and result in lower energy bills than traditional gas models. Induction cooktops are fast, easy to clean, energy-efficient, and avoid asthma-producing toxins. Solar panels recoup their investment costs in a few years, giving homeowners the benefit of decades of low-cost electricity. Electric vehicles are low maintenance, inexpensive to charge, and fun to drive.

Since installing clean energy electric upgrades to my home, my monthly utility bills have dropped to just a little more than the monthly service charge, and I never have to go to the gas station. There will be several clean energy fairs in town this spring, for those interested in learning more. With an initial investment and help from federal and state programs, homeowners can save money, have a healthy home and take Earth-friendly action.
