Letter to the Editor:

Trump’s bite is predictable

The week before Easter, Donald Trump peddled signed Bibles to raise campaign funds. The hypocrisy is mind-bending. A man with no capacity for shame, remorse, empathy or accountability is pandering to a fan base of white Christian nationalists who succumb to political idolatry.

In a desperate attempt to stave off the justice system from prosecuting him, he is running out the clock with appeals to delay the setting of trial dates. In his hush money trial, he is making vicious remarks about the judge’s daughter. If he is not stopped with a gag order, the remarks could escalate to threatening witnesses and instill fear of retribution among potential jurors.

Trump has called immigrants vermin and animals. He has said they are “poisoning the blood of our country.” In 2016, he often recited a parable about a woman who nursed a snake to health, then was bitten by it. The moral is that, “You knew I was a snake when you took me in.” It is a classic metaphor for Trump. When he says he will be a dictator, believe him.

Trump’s appeal to his base is to blame someone for their grievances. We have needed immigration reform for over 30 years. Trump told GOP senators to block a bipartisan reform bill so he can use immigration as a campaign issue.

You can’t drown out hate with more hate. Compromise is not a dirty word. We must come together with bipartisan solutions to our problems if our democracy is to survive.
