Letter to the Editor:

Fake patriotism is easily spotted

The “bloodbath” remark the former president recently couched in reference to the auto industry vis a vis electric car manufacturing production was tasteless and incendiary.

Be that as it may, the most revolting aspect of his hourlong screed — to this veteran — was his opening act. As he walked to the podium, an announcer darkly intoned, “Please rise for the horribly and unfairly treated Jan. 6 hostages.”

Why not honor true patriots — those serving in the armed forces? The first stanza of the national anthem then begins. With his MAGA hat firmly affixed, the former president then salutes. Next a voiceover of him reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Stanzas from each are then alternated.

Not that Donald Trump cares, but there are rules set forth by the U.S. Flag Code. Specifically, it requires men — not in military service uniform — to remove their hats during the national anthem, as well as during the Pledge of Allegiance.

As a sign of respect, civilians, such as Trump, should remove head gear and place it over their heart. In the absence of head gear, the customary gesture is to place the right hand over the heart.

To be clear, the Constitution, law and order, customs and courtesies, civility and compromise are ignored by the former president in his quest for power and tyranny. Thus, we witness his vengeance, disinformation, evasion, deception, disrespect and moral turpitude. He disdains democracy and continues to be a danger “to the Republic, for which it stands.”
