Letter to the Editor:

Abortion pill case was always a loser

The group attempting to ban the abortion pill mifepristone had two problems: 1) it had no standing, as it could not show any harm to its group; 2) it could not show merit in its case against the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug for medical use.

This case is simply an attempt to eliminate a pill that offers women a medical abortion. And the only honest reason this group had was its members’ religious beliefs. They believe abortion is wrong, and therefore, they want all abortion to be banned.

Their problem is they cannot go after a doctor who assisted in the abortion. The assistance is a pill. So they attacked the pill. You can’t attack a pill, so they tried to attack the agency that approved the pill.

There is no way the Supreme Court, even with the majority personally against abortion, is going to do mental gymnastics to support this group. The justices asked the group for its standing and did not receive any. The justices sort of asked the plaintiff group for some semblance of what was wrong with FDA approval, and they could not provide it.
