Vegas Play of the Day: WCC Tournament: Gonzaga vs. St. Mary’s

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

WCC Tournament: Gonzaga minus-9 vs. St. Mary's: $440 to win $400

It never seems like a bad bet to put money on Gonzaga coming out of the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga has won 16 of the last 21 WCC titles and only two other teams have won in that span.

If there's any bad news for the Bulldogs, it's that St. Mary's won last year and the last three times Gonzaga didn't win, the Gaels did. But this isn't the same St. Mary's team. This is one that needed a last-second shot to upset BYU on Monday night. Being a three-seed in a conference tournament is nothing to sneeze at, but it's still odd to see the Gaels behind BYU.

Gonzaga, meanwhile, is rolling as it always does. The Bulldogs are the No. 2 team in the AP poll and by far and away the best team in the conference. They should have no trouble winning their 17th title in 22 tries tonight. The only question is if they can win by nine. I think it's a safe bet.

Current Standings: Grimala (15-5, $9,165), Keefer (29-26-2, $8,575), Brewer (15-12, $7,595), Emerson (14-17, $5,750)
