Strip Casinos Begin Temporary Closures

The sign at the MGM Grand displays a message to guests Tuesday, March 17, 2020. MGM Resorts properties temporarily closed at midnight in an effort to stem the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

As estimated recently in Las Vegas Weekly, it appears likely that live production shows and concerts will be the final piece of the Las Vegas Strip entertainment landscape to return to form once casino resorts start to reopen in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MGM Resorts, which operates 13 Strip resorts, has canceled all live entertainment through June, aligning with current conjecture that some properties might reopen in limited capacity in late May or early June.

The company’s statement reads: “With so many unknowns at this moment around the schedule for property openings, stay at home orders across the country as well as access to travel, we have taken all entertainment off of the calendar through June. We will continue to share information about our plans for re-opening as they become available. Until then, please stay safe.”

Among the well-known productions further delayed from action are five Cirque du Soleil shows, Blue Man Group and Carrot Top at Luxor, Jabbawockeez and David Copperfield at MGM Grand, Terry Fator and Shin Lim at the Mirage and “Tournament of Kings” at Excalibur. The Bon Jovi concert at T-Mobile Arena set for June 15 has also been canceled and the next event on that venue’s calendar is dated August 15.

Among June’s postponed entertainment events, with new dates still to be determined, are Justin Bieber’s concert at T-Mobile and Bob Dylan’s show at Mandalay Bay Events Center. The temporary closures of MGM attractions including Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, the Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage and the Big Apple Rollercoaster at New York-New York have been extended through June 30.

MGM’s entertainment event cancelation policy involves a full and automatic refund within 30 days. If an event is postponed, guests should hold on to their tickets and when the new date has been confirmed, notification will be issued. At that time, an opportunity to request a refund will be made available. More information is available at [email protected].
