A small fire broke out this afternoon at a Las Vegas resort in an outdoor storage area where old patio furniture is stored near the pool, officials said.
Clark County Fire Department crews responded to the Westgate at about 3:30 p.m. to find a small fire at the pool deck, according to a news release.
An initial investigation revealed that the fire was started by a discarded cigarette, fire officials said. One person was hospitalized with minor injuries. That person is believed to have attempted to put out the fire.
Gordon Prouty, a Westgate spokesman, said the pool was evacuated once the fire was detected. It will likely remain closed until Saturday, he said.
The fire department responded with 11 fire engines, four trucks and three rescue vehicles.
“The older material of the furniture created the black smoke,” Prouty said. That smoke was visible in the area near between Paradise Road and the Las Vegas Country Club, where the property is located.
