Newly appointed Mayor Pro Tempore Stavros Anthony speaks to media after a City of Las Vegas council meeting adjourns at City Hall, downtown, Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

Clark County Commission candidate Stavros Anthony is seeking a recount of the race that the commission recently certified that he lost to rival Ross Miller by just 10 votes, the county said Thursday.

The recount begins Monday and is expected to take all week.

According to state law, a losing candidate can demand a recount within three days of a certification of election results. The county commission confirmed Anthony’s loss to Miller on Tuesday rather than call for a special election to clarify the will of voters in District C — Anthony’s initial preference as results showed him losing by fewer votes than there were unspecified “discrepancies” in the race. Election officials said there were 139 discrepancies, potentially casting doubt on the results.

If the recount doesn’t flip the results in Anthony’s favor, he will be responsible for the cost of the count; state law requires him to pay the estimated cost up front. If Anthony prevails, the county will refund the payment.

Republican Anthony, a Las Vegas city councilman, and Democrat Miller, a former Nevada secretary of state, are vying to fill the seat about to be vacated by termed-out Larry Brown.
