Police: Officer fires at suspect in shooting at apartment complex

Updated Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020 | 2:05 p.m.

A Metro Police officer opened fire this morning on a suspect in the shooting of a maintenance worker at an apartment complex west of the Strip, Capt. Nichole Splinter said.

The maintenance worker was struck multiple times and was being treated for his injuries, Splinter said. No information on his condition was released.

The suspect was only grazed by a bullet but was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, Splinter said. An office employee at the apartments in the 4000 block of West Viking Road, near Flamingo Road and Valley View Boulevard, called 911 about 9:10 a.m. to report that the maintenance worker was in a confrontation with an armed resident, Splinter said.

While on the line, the dispatcher heard gunshots, as did officers who were in the area, Splinter said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened when police arrived, but an officer opened fire on the suspect, Splinter said. After the officer fired, the suspect dropped his gun as ordered, she said.

Further details were not immediately available.
