A firefighter and two other people were hospitalized early this morning in a fire that tore through two houses in the west valley.

A firefighter and two other people were hospitalized early this morning in a fire that tore through two houses in the west valley, causing about $500,000 in monetary damage, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue said.

The firefighter and a person suffered smoke inhalation, while the third person sustained burn injuries, officials said. Five people are displaced.

The blaze was called in about 12:20 a.m. today in the 800 block of Eugene Cernan Street, near Alta and Buffalo drives.

Crews encountered flames fanning out a garage on a one-story house, officials said. As the “intensity of the fire was getting worse,” the flames spread to a two-story house next door. Additional crews were summoned, and the blaze was put out in about 90 minutes, officials said. “Because of the calm and hot weather conditions, dense smoke blanket the entire area making visibility almost nil and it was difficult to breath in the smoke,” the department said in a statement.

Investigators as of this morning were kept out of the houses because they remained smoldering hot, said officials, adding that other firefighters might also have inhaled smoke.

A cause of fire hadn’t been established.
