Earthquake shakes remote area of western Nevada

TONOPAH — An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 5.0 shook a remote area of western Nevada Wednesday morning where a stronger temblor occurred last week.

Nye County sheriff's Capt. David Boruchowitz said there were no immediate reports of damage and that the quake was barely felt.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake occurred at 6:36 a.m. 29 miles (46 kilometers) west-northwest of Tonopah at a preliminary depth of 7 miles (127 kilometers) .

Hundreds of aftershocks have been reported in the area since a 6.5 magnitude quake Friday morning caused minor damage to U.S. 95, the main highway between Las Vegas and Reno.
