Program helps local families defray child care expenses amid pandemic

Families feeling the financial sting of the COVID-19 pandemic can get help with child care costs thanks to a grant program through the United Way of Southern Nevada.

The UWSN Cares Childcare Assistance program will defray child care costs by up to $100 per week, per child, as children remain away from school on distance learning.

“We are passionate about helping parents and caregivers keep their children safe and secure so that they can continue to work and provide for their families,” said Kyle Rahn, president and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. “This funding comes right in time to help families impacted by COVID-19.”

The $1.7 million program is funded by Clark County’s share of federal CARES Act money.

“Clark County is committed to working with our community partners to help our local families get through this pandemic, and one of the most basic needs many parents need is assistance paying for child care,” said Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, chairman of a regional committee organized to provide support to working families during this time. “We appreciate United Way of Southern Nevada’s assistance in helping us provide this support to families in need.”

Funding for children up to age 12 is available through Dec. 30 for qualified applicants directly through child care providers. Special exceptions may be made for older children.

“Many families are struggling to make ends meet because of job losses and cutbacks in work hours and simply can’t afford child care and expenses,” said Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson, another member of the regional subcommittee. “We are working collaboratively with all the local jurisdictions to ensure families most in need of this support can get it.”

Assistance will be provided directly through licensed child care providers. The program also provides limited support for providers. To learn more about UWSN Cares, visit uwsn.org/UWSNCares.
