Blood drive to honor Oct. 1 shooting victims

Las Vegas Ballpark is hosting a one-day blood drive in memory of the victims of the Oct. 1, 2017, Las Vegas Strip shooting.

The One October Memorial Blood Drive will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at the ballpark in Downtown Summerlin, 1650 S. Pavilion Center Drive.

It is being held in tribute to the 58 people killed when a gunman opened fire from a hotel tower into a crowd at a country music festival. More than 800 people were injured in the tragedy.

Blood drive donors must make appointments, which can be booked at bloodhero.com. Per state mandates, masks and temperature checks are also required.

The event is being hosted in partnership with Vitalant, the state’s largest blood provider, which is providing COVID-19 antibody testing with every donation.

Donors will receive test results through a private online profile, and anyone who tests positive can then opt to donate convalescence plasma to aid in the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

For those who already know they have recovered from COVID-19, Vitalant will be collecting convalescent plasma donations at the drive. For eligibility requirements and an application, go online to www.Vitalant.org/COVIDFree.

The blood drive is being presented by Nevada Health Link, the online insurance marketplace operated by the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange.
