Las Vegas area sets new record of 151 days without rain

It’s been more than 60 years since summer has been this dry in southern Nevada.

The National Weather Service says Las Vegas broke a record Friday of 151 days without measurable rain, passing a mark set in 1959.

The official regional monitoring station at McCarran International Airport a sprinkling of rain on April 20, just 0.2 inches (5 millimeters). A trace of rain fell July 19, but the amount didn’t register at McCarran.

In 1959, the Las Vegas area went without rain for 150 days, from Feb. 22 to July 21.

Officials say rain isn't forecast anytime soon. Friday’s high is expected to reach 102 degrees (38.9 Celsius) beneath a haze of smoke from wildfires in California.

The weather service has issued a red flag fire warning due to expected gusty afternoon winds and low humidity.

Air quality officials have extended a smoke advisory through Monday. The Clark County Department of Environment and Sustainability said the air can aggravate respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma or heart disease.
