Rain falls on parts of Las Vegas Valley, a rarity amid dry stretch

That was indeed rain you smelled, and maybe even felt.

A few sprinkles fell over the Las Vegas Valley late Monday afternoon, the first measurable precipitation in five months.

McCarran International Airport measured a trace as of about 5 p.m., but points south got a little wetter, said Chelsea Kryston, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Las Vegas — about 0.04 inches in Anthem and 0.08 inches in Seven Hills.

Las Vegas hasn’t seen measurable rain since showers dropped 0.2 inches on April 20 or any at all since a trace fell July 20.

Monday’s rain was a one-off, though, as drier air returns and a high-pressure ridge starts developing in the area by Wednesday.

That could usher in the last 100-degree spell of the season, Kryston said.
