Metro Police today identified an officer who fired on a man they said attacked his partner with a screwdriver Wednesday outside a Las Vegas gun range.
He is Officer Andrew Nguyen, 34, police said.
Three civilians also shot at the suspect, who died, police said. It has not yet been determined which bullets struck him, police said.
The incident unfolded Wednesday outside The Range 702 indoor shooting facility, 5999 Dean Martin Drive.
Nguyen and his partner were dispatched about reports of a man tampering with other people’s belongings and causing a disturbance, police said.
As the officers were trying to talk to the man, he pulled out a screwdriver and attacked one of them, stabbing her, police said. That’s when Nguyen and the three civilians fired their guns, police said.
The man died at the scene, while the officer was taken to University Medical Center, police said. The officer, whose name has not been released, has since been discharged from the hospital, police said.
Metro officials are expected to release any body-worn camera footage and suspect information in the coming days.
Nguyen was placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
