An altercation at a Las Vegas smoke shop Thursday night escalated into a shooting that left a man dead, according to Metro Police.

Fahd Mohsin Dayani, 30, a clerk at the shop, was arrested Friday on a count of murder, police said. Additional details about his arrest weren’t immediately available.

Dayani was booked at the Clark County Detention Center, where he is being held without the possibility of bail.

A panic alarm led officers to the scene in the 2400 block of Desert Inn Road, near Eastern Avenue, about 6 p.m., Lt. Ray Spencer said.

The victim, who was shot once and found directly outside the business, died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Spencer said.

Less than three hours into the investigation, detectives were exploring the theory that the victim, who was in his early 30s, had previously shoplifted or had shoplifted tonight, Spencer said.

The altercation began inside and continued outside where the shooting occurred, Spencer said.

If the preliminary information is accurate, the slaying is reminiscent of one in 2016 when a smoke shop clerk fatally shot a 13-year-old boy, who’d attempted to steal smoking paraphernalia.

That evening, on Dec. 2, 2016, employee Raad Sunna fired his gun eight or nine times from about 40 feet, striking Fabriccio Patti seven times, Metro said at the time.

The teenager and his two young accomplices weren’t armed, police said. That shooting occurred at the Desert Breeze Plaza in the 8600 block of West Flamingo Road, near Durango Road.

Sunna was originally booked on a murder count, but later pleaded guilty to the lesser gross misdemeanor of aiming a firearm at a person. His 364-day jail sentence was suspended two years ago, and he was placed on no more than three years of probation.
