A large plume billowing from the west valley is not a cloud but remnants of a wildfire burning about 40 miles west of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management.

About 700 acres were burning near State Route 160 and Sandy Valley Road about 8 p.m., officials said. The fire, which was blamed on human actions, was 0% contained.

No structures were in danger at the time, with the closest being less than 2 miles away, but the area was evacuated of campers and a group of Boy Scouts, officials said.

Those in homes and commercial buildings along Mount Potosi Road have received notices recommending that they leave, officials said. No injuries had been reported as of 8 p.m.

The blaze, reported about 1:30 p.m., was scorching woodland, grass and brush, officials said.

The Clark County Fire Department said it was assisting the Mountain Springs Fire Department, the BLM, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Additional details were not immediately available.
