Police identify suspect in lengthy standoff at Las Vegas motel

Metro Police records have identified a suspect accused of shooting at officers, and kidnapping a child and his babysitter during a nearly 30-hour standoff with police at a Las Vegas motel.

Antionio Barry Edwards, 24, was jailed at the Clark County Detention Center on 18 felony counts related to the incident, which unfolded about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 8000 block of Dean Martin Road.

He was being held on a $100,000 bond, Las Vegas Justice Court records show. His criminal charges include: kidnapping, assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon, and illegally possessing a gun, logs show.

Barry Edwards is due in court Wednesday. Logs didn’t show an attorney on record.

The series of events began when a Metro officer was in the process of recovering a stolen motorcycle and vehicle, police said.

Barry Edwards tried leaving in the motorcycle and fought the officer, pulling out a gun, which caused the officer to retrieve, and the suspect to hole himself in his apartment.

While officers were surrounding the complex, Barry Edwards fired a gun at them from the inside, police said.

Unbeknownst to police, Barry Edwards used a hammer and saw to make a hole through a wall, and break into an adjoining apartment, where he kidnapped a 4-year-old boy and his babysitter, police said.

The child was released after a few hours, but the standoff continued into the next day, when he eventually let the woman go before turning himself in, police said.

A copy of his arrest report was not immediately available.
