Metro IDs officers involved in shooting at mobile home park

Metro Police identified Thursday the names of two officers involved in a shooting that left a 25-year-old man injured earlier in the week at a trailer park he lived in.

Officers Jeffrey Burr, 34, and Damario Simmons, 29, have been placed on paid administrative review pending a review of the shooting, police said in a news release. Burr was hired by Metro in 2009 and Simmons was hired earlier this year.

Both officers are assigned to the Northeast Area Command, Community Policing Division, police said. In a briefing of the incident Thursday, Assistant Sheriff Lazaro Chavez said Burr fired 13 rounds, and Simmons fired six rounds, each from their issued Glock 17 9 mm handguns.

Taveon Davidson was identified as the man injured in the shooting, Chavez said. Metro said Tuesday it was called to a mobile home park in the 2100 block of North Pecos Road, near Lake Mead Boulevard shortly after 4 p.m. after receiving reports of a man walking around with a gun, later identified as Davidson.

Upon arrival, police observed Davidson walking toward the front of the complex, Chavez said. After briefly speaking with Davidson, officers asked him to face a car so they could conduct a weapons pat down.

Davidson then fled, and a foot pursuit occurred, Chavez said. Burr observed Davidson pull out his handgun, later identified as a Springfield Hellcat 9 mm handgun, while he was running away.

Burr told Davidson to drop the weapon several times, but Davidson did not comply, Chavez said. At one point during the pursuit, Davidson turned around and fired a single shot at Burr. Both officers returned fire, striking Davidson from about 25 feet away.

Davidson continued to run away and hopped a short chain-link fence, but surrendered shortly after, Chavez said. Additional officers arrived on scene and Davidson was taken into custody without incident.

Davidson was rendered medical aid and later transported to University Medical Center Trauma with non-life-threatening injuries, Chavez said. He was arrested on two counts of attempted murder on a police officer, shooting into an occupied structure, prohibited person with a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

The lone round fired by Davidson struck a trailer with somebody inside directly behind one of the officers, Chavez said. Stray shots from the officers struck nearby trash cans and an eave of another nearby trailer.
