Police: Las Vegas man arrested in drug overdose death

A man arrested last week admitted selling pills to a man found dead from a drug overdose more than a year ago, according to a Metro Police report.

Timothy McCracken, 27, of Las Vegas remained at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of second-degree murder, jail records show.

Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Suzan Baucum on Tuesday set McCracken’s bail at $50,000.

Jacob Mathis was found dead April 3, 2021, at his apartment in the 9500 block of Bermuda Road after a maintenance worker went inside to fix a leak and found him unresponsive, the report said.

An official with the Clark County Coroner’s Office found four pills in Mathis’ wallet that later tested positive for fentanyl, a synthetic opioid more than 50 times stronger than heroin, the report said.

Police searched Mathis’ phone and discovered text messages between him and McCracken in which Mathis agreed on April 2, 2021, to purchase five Percocet pills, the report said.

The pills found in Mathis’ wallet were sent to a forensic lab and tested positive for acetaminophen and fentanyl, according to the report.

In September, a toxicology report by the Clark County Coroner’s Office showed Mathis died from an overdose of fentanyl and other drugs.

Metro waited until April 7 to arrest McCracken after setting up surveillance at his home near Bermuda and Pebble Road, the report said.

McCracken said he sold pills to Mathis hours before he died, according to the report. He told police he got the pills from a man near Far Hills Avenue and the 215 Beltway, the report said.

McCracken is due back in court June 1 for a preliminary hearing, court records show.
