A bicyclist died and eight people were injured Friday night after a driver suspected of impairment caused a 10-vehicle crash near UNLV, according to Metro Police.

Marcos Francisco Benitez, 27, was allegedly driving a pickup truck about 5:30 p.m. on Flamingo Road when he collided with the rear of an SUV near Claymont Street. He immediately fled, speeding and striking two bicyclists in the far-right bus lane, police said. He continued to drive away, colliding with multiple vehicles stopped at the intersection of Flamingo and Maryland Parkway.

One of the bicyclists, a 37-year-old from Las Vegas, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other bicyclist was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition, police said. Five other victims in varying vehicles suffered minor injuries and one experienced moderate injuries.
