A Las Vegas man died Tuesday night after he and his father were hit by an an SUV while crossing a street, according to Metro Police.
The father and son were hit about 8 p.m. as they crossed Nellis Boulevard near Winterwood Boulevard, police said.
The SUV driver, Justino Garcia-Avila, 32, lost control of the SUV when he attempted to swerve and avoid striking the pedestrians, police said. The vehicle ran off the side of the road, colliding with a streetlamp and block wall, police said.
Both pedestrians were taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where the 21-year-old son was pronounced dead, police said. The 53-year-old father suffered critical injuries, police said.
Garcia-Avila was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of reckless driving and DUI, according to county records.
The collision remains under investigation, police said.
