Mount Charleston Friday, Sept. 16, 2022.

A man killed in a backcountry avalanche in the Mount Charleston area on Monday has been identified as 32-year-old Punan Zhou of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The cause of death was accidental due to blunt force trauma, officials said.

Law enforcement responded about noon Monday to reports of an injured person on the mountain, hours ahead of a winter storm, officials said.

The man’s body was recovered and transported down the mountain Monday evening, authorities said.

More than 8 inches of snow has fallen over Lee Canyon since the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Mount Charleston area at 4 p.m. Monday, according to meteorologist John Salmen.

The weather advisory is in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday, with more snowfall expected throughout the day, Salmen said.
