Pedestrian killed by Metro officer-driven vehicle in Las Vegas, officials say

A Metro Police corrections officer was driving a pickup truck in West Las Vegas on Tuesday night when he struck and killed a pedestrian, officials say.

Michael Ernest Florio, 37, was traveling southbound on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Balzar Avenue about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, when he struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the street outside of a marked crosswalk.

The pedestrian, a 35-year-old North Las Vegas man, was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition and was eventually pronounced dead, police said.

Florio was identified as a Metro corrections officer, and Nevada State Police responded to assume the primary investigative responsibility for the crash.

The collision remains under investigation, police said.
