Have sketch pad, will travel

Walking around the Phoenix track on race weekend is like taking a step back in time. There is no Vegas-style infield, which means there is no live music, no showgirls, no fluorescent fake palm trees and no Robin Leach. (That’s a good thing.) The Phoenix track is old school with a tinny-looking, cramped garage and a cinder block media center. It has a charm all its own that I enjoyed.

Here are a few observations that made their way into my sketch pad.

Matt Kenseth’s yellow-clad crewmembers are called the Killer Bees, but the volume on their uniforms didn’t compare with the fire suit Tony “The Human Lemon” Stewart was wearing to promote his sponsor Subway restaurants.

The famous cheap seats on the dirt hill at the track offer the best view of the action, but once the sun goes down there isn’t much lighting to find your way around.

If the 99 car hadn’t suffered that penalty, who knows what Carl Edwards may have been capable of.
