Welcome to the Whine Country

If Napa Valley is the Wine Country then NASCAR Nation is the Whine Country. Browse the chat rooms, blogs and letters to the editor of racing publications and you will see a proliferation of complaints coming from the so-called “fans” who detest everything about the sport. They whine about the points system. They whine about the Car of Tomorrow. They whine about the drivers’ personalities. I haven’t heard so much whining since the last time I visited a room full of newborn babies at a maternity ward.

What really bothers these fans is change. Change upsets people who are comfortable with the status quo. But NASCAR has always understood that if it doesn’t change with the times, it will be left behind. Think for a moment what NASCAR would be like today if it hadn’t embraced change throughout its history. The sport would still be a collection of battered, souped-up sedans sliding around isolated dirt tracks in the South.

I certainly don’t agree with every decision NASCAR makes, but I love racing and nothing will stop me from watching NASCAR-- no matter how many annoying commercials there are during the race telecast.
