Car of Tomorrow looks good at Daytona

Say what you will about the Car of Tomorrow. It’s ugly. It looks the same no mater what model it is. It’s sacrilegious to have a rear wing on a NASCAR racecar. Heck, the first time I saw the car I wondered how it would be able to keep its crazy-looking splitter in one piece for 500 miles. But judging from the racecar’s performance at the Bud Shootout, I think we are in for a great Daytona 500.

We didn’t see one lap in the entire Bud Shootout that had single-file racing, the cars seemed to be very capable of manipulating the draft and given the equal bumper heights, I think the bump drafting was more effective. Jimmie Johnson’s successful last lap bump of Dale Jr. is evidence of that.

The Car of Tomorrow is obviously continuing to evolve and the evolution is leading to an improved racecar. As a result, it looks like the Daytona 500 will be a very competitive race. But the real test of this car’s ability to produce exciting racing will come when it starts hitting the pavement of the 1 ½ mile tracks for the first time.
